Influenza Virus
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a highly contagious respiratory virus that infects the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It spreads primarily through respiratory droplets when infected people cough, sneeze, or talk. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and typically include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and fatigue. Influenza can lead to serious complications, especially in young children, elderly adults, and those with underlying health conditions. Annual vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the flu and its complications. Antiviral drugs are also available that can treat the flu, reducing the severity and duration of symptoms if taken early in the course of the illness.
