BCRP
Breast Cancer Resistance Protein (BCRP), also known as ABCG2, is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family. It functions as an efflux transporter, actively pumping a wide variety of substrates, including chemotherapeutic agents, out of cells. BCRP is highly expressed in various barrier tissues, such as the intestinal epithelium and the blood-brain barrier, playing a critical role in drug absorption and distribution. Its expression in cancer cells is associated with the development of multidrug resistance, complicating treatment efficacy. Targeting BCRP to inhibit its function has become a significant strategy in overcoming drug resistance in cancer therapy, enhancing the effectiveness of chemotherapeutic drugs.
