GLUT
GLUT, or Glucose Transporter proteins, are integral membrane proteins that facilitate the transport of glucose across cell membranes. This family of transporters is vital for regulating glucose levels in the blood and ensuring a steady supply of energy to various cells and tissues. Each GLUT isoform has specific tissue distributions and functional roles, adapting to the metabolic demands of different cell types. For instance, GLUT1 is responsible for basal glucose uptake necessary for normal cellular functions, while GLUT4, found primarily in muscle and adipose tissue, is regulated by insulin and plays a key role in glucose homeostasis. Dysregulation of GLUT can lead to metabolic disorders such as diabetes.
