Adiponectin Receptor
Adiponectin receptors (AdipoRs) are integral membrane proteins that mediate the effects of adiponectin, a hormone secreted by adipose tissue that plays a critical role in regulating glucose levels and fatty acid breakdown. There are two main types of adiponectin receptors, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2, each with distinct tissue distributions and functions. AdipoR1 is predominantly found in muscles, enhancing glucose uptake and fatty acid oxidation. AdipoR2 is primarily expressed in the liver, influencing glucose production and lipid metabolism. The activation of these receptors by adiponectin is linked to increased insulin sensitivity, making them significant targets in the treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
