Cytochrome P450
Cytochrome P450 enzymes are a large and diverse group of enzymes that play a crucial role in the metabolism of a wide range of substances, including drugs, toxins, and steroids. These enzymes are primarily found in the liver but are also present in many other tissues. They function by adding or removing chemical groups to/from these substances, aiding in their solubilization and elimination from the body. Because of their central role in drug metabolism, variations in P450 enzyme activity can significantly affect individual responses to medications, leading to differences in drug efficacy and risk of adverse effects. Moreover, these enzymes are important in the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids.
