Gutathione S-transferase
Glutathione S-transferase (GST) is a family of enzymes that play a key role in detoxification by catalyzing the conjugation of the antioxidant molecule glutathione (GSH) to various endogenous and xenobiotic compounds. This reaction enhances the solubility of harmful substances, making them easier to excrete from the body. GSTs are found in various organisms, including humans, and are highly expressed in the liver. They are involved in the metabolism of carcinogens, drugs, and products of oxidative stress, thereby protecting cells from toxic injuries and contributing to cellular health. There are several classes of GSTs, each with specific substrates, indicating a sophisticated level of regulation and specialization within different cellular environments.
