Δ4-Dafachronic acid(CAT: I011696) is a steroid hormone that regulates the developmental timing of dauer formation in nematodes. It is a member of the dafachronic acid family of hormones, which are synthesized from cholesterol in response to environmental and nutritional cues. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, Δ4-dafachronic acid acts as an endocrine signal that inhibits the formation of the dauer larva, a developmentally arrested and stress-resistant stage that is triggered by adverse environmental conditions. Δ4-Dafachronic acid exerts its effects by binding to the nuclear hormone receptor DAF-12, which in turn regulates the expression of genes involved in developmental timing and metabolism.
