2-Guanidinoethylmercaptosuccinic acid(CAT: I011528), also known as MESNA, is a sulfur-containing organic compound used as a chemoprotective agent to reduce the toxicity of certain chemotherapy drugs, particularly ifosfamide, and cyclophosphamide. It works by binding to and detoxifying acrolein, a toxic metabolite produced by these drugs. MESNA is administered intravenously or orally and has been shown to significantly reduce the incidence of urotoxicity and hemorrhagic cystitis associated with these chemotherapy agents. It is also used in the treatment of acetaminophen overdose and other toxicities involving the liver.
