6-hydroxy Melatonin is the primary active metabolite of melatonin (Item No. <span class=/itemid/>14427</span>). 6-hydroxy Melatonin acts as an agonist at the melatonin 1 (MT<sub>1</sub>) and MT<sub>2</sub> receptors, with approximately the same potency as melatonin in a competition assay using [ Melatonin is an indoleamine neurohormone whose levels vary in a daily cycle, thereby allowing the entrainment of the circadian rhythms of several biological functions in animals, plants, and microbes. Melatonin also has antioxidative properties, but 6-hydroxy melatonin is a better scavenger of reactive oxygen species than melatonin in rat brain homogenates.
