Aminopterin(Cat No.:R004407)is a potent antifolate and antineoplastic agent that inhibits dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), an enzyme essential for DNA synthesis and cell division. By blocking DHFR, Aminopterin prevents the conversion of dihydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate, depleting the cell’s nucleotide pool and halting DNA and RNA synthesis, leading to cell death. It was historically used in cancer treatment, particularly leukemia, but has been largely replaced by methotrexate due to toxicity concerns. Aminopterin is still used in research to study cell cycle regulation and the effects of folate metabolism inhibition in cancer cells.
