Bacitracin B1 is one of the components of the bacitracin complex, a mixture of cyclic polypeptide antibiotics produced by Bacillus subtilis and related organisms. Bacitracin B1, like other bacitracins, is primarily used for its activity against Gram-positive bacteria. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, specifically interfering with the dephosphorylation of bactoprenol, a molecule essential for transporting peptidoglycan precursors across the cell membrane. Bacitracin B1 is often used in topical preparations to treat skin infections and prevent wound infections. It is part of the broader bacitracin complex, commonly used in combination with other antibiotics in ointments.
