Benazeprilat is an inhibitor of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE; IC<sub>50</sub> = 0.28 nM in plasma from dog) and the active metabolite of the prodrug benazepril. Benazeprilat is produced in the liver following cleavage of the ester group from benazepril. Formulations containing the prodrug benazepril have been used to treat hypertension in human and veterinary medicine.
