Butanoic acid, also known as butyric acid, is a short-chain fatty acid with the chemical formula C₃H₇COOH. It consists of a four-carbon straight chain, with a carboxyl group (-COOH) at one end. This organic acid occurs naturally in animal fats and plant oils, and it’s also found in butter, giving it its distinctive rancid odor. Butanoic acid is used industrially in the production of esters for flavorings and perfumes. It also has applications in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and plastics.
