Cholic acid(CAT: R012539) is a primary bile acid with the molecular formula C₂₄H₄₀O₅, naturally synthesized in the liver from cholesterol. It appears as a white crystalline powder, sparingly soluble in water but soluble in ethanol and other organic solvents. Cholic acid plays a vital role in the emulsification and absorption of dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins by forming micelles in the intestine. In medicine, it is used to treat certain bile acid synthesis disorders and peroxisomal disorders. In research, it serves as a biochemical reagent for studying lipid metabolism, bile acid pathways, and micelle formation, as well as a precursor for synthesizing bile acid derivatives.
