Cisapride(CAT: I004948) is a prokinetic drug used to treat gastrointestinal conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and gastroparesis. It works by stimulating serotonin 5-HT4 receptors, which increases acetylcholine release and enhances gastrointestinal motility. This promotes smoother and faster passage of food through the digestive system, aiding in gastric emptying. Despite its effectiveness, Cisapride was withdrawn or heavily restricted in many countries due to its potential to cause serious cardiac side effects, including QT interval prolongation and life-threatening arrhythmias. However, it is still used in some research settings and specialized cases where other prokinetic agents are ineffective.
