Difluorochloromethane, also known as HCFC-22 or R-22, is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon commonly used as a refrigerant in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. It is part of the second generation of refrigerants designed to replace chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were phased out due to their harmful impact on the ozone layer. While difluorochloromethane has a lower ozone depletion potential compared to CFCs, it still contributes to ozone depletion and global warming. As a result, its use is being gradually phased out under international agreements like the Montreal Protocol. R-22 is being replaced by more environmentally friendly refrigerants, such as HFCs and natural alternatives.
