Emamectin B1a is a derivative of avermectin, a class of macrocyclic lactone compounds produced by the soil bacterium Streptomyces avermitilis. It is widely used as an insecticide and acaricide in agriculture and aquaculture due to its potent activity against a broad spectrum of pests, particularly caterpillars and other insect larvae. Emamectin B1a works by binding to the glutamate-gated chloride channels in the nervous system of insects, leading to paralysis and death. It is favored for its high efficacy at low doses and its relatively low toxicity to non-target organisms, including mammals.
