Gambogic acid (CAT: I002945) has been found to exert its anticancer effects through the modulation of B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) family proteins. BCL-2 family proteins play a critical role in regulating apoptosis (programmed cell death). Gambogic acid has been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells by inhibiting anti-apoptotic proteins such as BCL-2 and BCL-XL while promoting the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins like BAX and BAK. This imbalance in the expression of BCL-2 family proteins leads to mitochondrial dysfunction and activation of caspases, ultimately triggering apoptosis in cancer cells. The ability of gambogic acid to target BCL-2 family proteins makes it a promising candidate for the development of novel anticancer therapies.
