Halothane (CAT: A000083), commonly referred to as Fluothane, is a halogenated inhalation anesthetic widely used for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. It acts as a volatile anesthetic by interacting with various neurotransmitter receptors, including gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, to induce a state of unconsciousness and pain relief during surgical procedures. Halothane is also recognized as a substrate for the cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP3A4, which plays a vital role in its metabolism and elimination from the body.
