Hexamethonium bromide is a ganglionic blocker that was historically used as an antihypertensive medication. It works by inhibiting the transmission of nerve impulses in the autonomic nervous system, particularly at the nicotinic receptors of the sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia. This leads to a reduction in blood pressure by causing vasodilation and decreasing heart rate. However, due to significant side effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation, its use has been largely replaced by more selective antihypertensive drugs.
