The ketone ester R,S-1,3-butanediol acetoacetate diester (BD-AcAc 2, CAT: I000780) exerts its pharmacologic action by increasing blood ketone levels when administered orally. It acts as a substrate for ketone body metabolism and elevates mean blood ketone bodies to around 3.5 mm. BD-AcAc 2 has been studied for its effects on metabolic parameters, such as lowering plasma glucose, insulin, and leptin levels. Additionally, it shows promise in delaying central nervous system oxygen toxicity (CNS-OT) seizures in rats exposed to hyperbaric oxygen.
