Lubiprostone is a chloride channel activator used in research and therapy for gastrointestinal disorders, such as chronic idiopathic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C). It works by selectively activating ClC-2 chloride channels on the apical membrane of intestinal epithelial cells, increasing chloride-rich fluid secretion into the lumen. This enhances intestinal motility and softens stool. Lubiprostone is widely studied for its role in electrolyte transport, gut motility, and its potential applications in treating disorders related to impaired fluid secretion.
