Lutetium Lu 177 dotatate (Lutathera) is a radiopharmaceutical used to treat certain neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). It combines a radioactive isotope, lutetium-177 (Lu-177), with a molecule called DOTATATE, which has a high affinity for somatostatin receptors found on NET cells. Lu 177 dotatate binds to these receptors when administered, delivering radiation directly to the tumor cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This targeted therapy can effectively treat NETs that have spread or are inoperable, offering a promising treatment option for patients with advanced disease.
