Melarsonyl(Cat No.:I020560)is an organoarsenic compound historically used in the treatment of parasitic diseases, particularly African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) caused by Trypanosoma species. It acts by interfering with parasite metabolism, particularly affecting thiol-containing enzymes critical for parasite survival. Melarsonyl disrupts the redox balance within the parasite, leading to its death. While effective, its use has been largely replaced by safer and more modern treatments due to potential toxicity concerns. Melarsonyl played a significant role in early antiparasitic therapy and remains a reference point in the development of trypanocidal drugs.
