Methyl protodioscin (CAT: I004003), also known as NSC-698790, is a furostanol bisglycoside with potential antitumor properties. In vitro, studies have shown that methyl protodioscin reduces proliferation and induces cell cycle arrest in A549 cells. It exerts its apoptotic effects through various mechanisms, including the reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential, release of mitochondrial cytochrome c to the cytosol, activation of caspase-3, and modulation of Bcl-2 family proteins. Additionally, in THP-1 macrophages, methyl protodioscin enhances cholesterol efflux and decreases gene expressions related to cholesterol and fatty acid synthesis. These findings suggest the potential of methyl protodioscin as an antitumor and cholesterol-modulating agent.
