Mevastatin(Cat No.:A000954)is a naturally occurring statin that inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme responsible for cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver. By blocking this enzyme, mevastatin effectively reduces cholesterol levels, making it a precursor in the development of modern statins like lovastatin. It was initially discovered from the fungus Penicillium citrinum and has been extensively studied for its lipid-lowering properties. Beyond its cardiovascular applications, mevastatin has shown potential in cancer research due to its ability to interfere with cellular proliferation and induce apoptosis in certain tumor cells.
