Nifedipine is a calcium channel blocker used primarily to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain). It works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into smooth muscle cells and cardiac cells, leading to the relaxation of blood vessels and a reduction in heart workload. Nifedipine helps lower blood pressure and alleviate angina symptoms. It is also used in the management of Raynaud’s disease. Common side effects include dizziness, flushing, and swelling in the legs or ankles.
