Nigericin (sodium salt) is potassium ionophore, exchanges K+ for H+ across biological membranes. Also acts as an ionophore for Pb2+ with no activity with other divalent cations.Nigericin (sodium salt) induced egress depends on an efflux of potassium from the cell and requires phospholipase C function and parasite motility.
