Norgestimate (CAT: I011415) is a synthetic progestin that is used in combination with ethinyl estradiol as an oral contraceptive. It is an acetylated derivative of norethindrone, a naturally occurring progestin. Norgestimate works by inhibiting ovulation, altering the cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration, and modifying the endometrium to prevent implantation. As part of a combined oral contraceptive pill, it provides effective contraception by suppressing the release of eggs from the ovaries, thus preventing pregnancy. Norgestimate is well-tolerated and has a low incidence of side effects when used as directed.
