Padoporfin (also known as WST09) is a photosensitizer used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer treatment. When activated by light, padoporfin generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which cause localized damage to cancer cells, leading to apoptosis and tumor destruction. It is particularly studied for treating localized tumors, such as prostate cancer, due to its high specificity and limited damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Padoporfin’s rapid activation and clearance from the body make it a valuable tool in minimizing side effects and improving the precision of photodynamic therapies in oncology.
