Paraoxon(Cat No.:R002350) is a highly toxic organophosphate compound, primarily known as the active metabolite of the insecticide parathion. It functions by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme essential for breaking down neurotransmitters in the nervous system. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of acetylcholine, causing prolonged nerve signal transmission, which can result in muscle paralysis and respiratory failure. Due to its potent neurotoxic effects, paraoxon is also studied in toxicology as a model substance for nerve agent poisoning.
