Quinacrine hydrochloride is an antimalarial and antiparasitic drug that also has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. Originally developed to treat malaria, quinacrine works by interfering with the parasite’s ability to replicate within red blood cells. Beyond its antimalarial activity, it has been used to treat conditions such as giardiasis and lupus due to its immune-modulating effects. Quinacrine also inhibits phospholipase A2 and can alter cellular signaling pathways, which contributes to its diverse therapeutic applications. Although its use has declined with the advent of newer drugs, it remains valuable in research and niche medical treatments.
