Rapacuronium bromide is a fast-acting, non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent used to induce muscle relaxation during surgical procedures or mechanical ventilation. It works by blocking acetylcholine at nicotinic receptors on the neuromuscular junction, preventing muscle contraction. Rapacuronium was initially favored for its rapid onset and short duration of action compared to other muscle relaxants. However, its use was discontinued due to concerns over serious side effects, particularly bronchospasm, which posed risks to patients during anesthesia. Despite its withdrawal from clinical use, rapacuronium bromide remains a point of interest in pharmacological studies of neuromuscular blockers.
