Reserpine is an alkaloid derived from the plant Rauwolfia serpentina, historically used as an antihypertensive and antipsychotic medication. It works by inhibiting the vesicular monoamine transporter (VMAT), reducing the storage of neurotransmitters like norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin in nerve endings, thus lowering blood pressure and calming symptoms of psychosis. Reserpine was widely used to treat high blood pressure and schizophrenia but has largely been replaced by newer medications due to side effects like depression and sedation.
