Sertraline (CAT: I009444) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used primarily as an antidepressant medication. It works by increasing the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain that helps regulate mood, in the synaptic space by inhibiting its reuptake. Sertraline is commonly prescribed for the treatment of major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It may also be used off-label for other conditions such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Sertraline is thought to alleviate symptoms of these disorders by restoring the balance of serotonin neurotransmission in the brain.
