Theophylline(Cat No.:I004187) is a compound derived from xanthine that acts as a competitive and nonselective inhibitor of phosphodiesterase enzymes. By inhibiting phosphodiesterase, it increases intracellular levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), leading to smooth muscle relaxation and bronchodilation. Theophylline also acts as a nonselective antagonist of adenosine receptors, blocking their effects. Due to its dual mechanisms of action, theophylline is used in the treatment of respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to relieve bronchospasms and improve breathing.
