Ticarcillin disodium with clavulanate potassium (commonly known as Timentin) is a combination antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. Ticarcillin is a broad-spectrum, beta-lactam antibiotic that belongs to the penicillin class, effective against many Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. However, some bacteria produce beta-lactamase enzymes that can degrade ticarcillin. To counteract this, clavulanate potassium, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, is added. The combination, typically in a 15:1 ratio, allows ticarcillin to remain effective against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria, making Timentin particularly useful in treating resistant infections, including those in the respiratory tract, urinary tract, bones, and joints.
