Tiopronin is an antioxidant agent, used for the treatment of cystinuria by controlling the rate of cystine precipitation and excretion.
Tiopronin is an antioxidant with a free thiol (sulfidryl) group that has been shown to protect against cisplatin nephrotoxicity both in vitro and in vivo. Tiopronin improves the defence of the cochlea and scavenge the reactive oxygen species, whereas vitamin E (a-tocopherol) and vitamin C act by inhibiting lipid peroxidation and preventing free radical formation.
Tiopronin significantly lowers both the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels, while only the serum ALT level is lowered by ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in rats. Tiopronin significantly decreases the serum and liver levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC) and free fatty acids (FFA) as well as the serum LDL-C level, and increases the serum HDL-C level.
