Tyrocidine is a cyclic polypeptide antibiotic produced by the bacterium Bacillus brevis. It is one of the main components of the antibiotic mixture known as tyrothricin, which also contains gramicidin. Tyrocidine is effective against Gram-positive bacteria by disrupting their cell membranes, leading to cell lysis and death. Due to its mode of action, it is primarily used in topical applications to treat bacterial infections of the skin and mucous membranes. Tyrocidine’s potent antibacterial activity makes it valuable in clinical settings, although its toxicity limits its use to topical applications rather than systemic use.
