Vitamin D4, also known as 22-dihydroergocalciferol, is one of the less common forms of vitamin D. Like other forms of vitamin D, it plays a role in the regulation of calcium and phosphate in the body, contributing to bone health. Vitamin D4 is derived from a plant-based sterol called 22-dihydroergosterol and is structurally similar to Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) but with slight differences in its molecular structure. While Vitamin D2 and D3 are the most commonly studied and used forms in supplements, Vitamin D4 has been identified in some mushrooms and other fungi. Its physiological effects are not as well understood as those of the other vitamin D analogs.
