Zimelidine dihydrochloride(CAT: I010458) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that was originally developed as an antidepressant. It functions by selectively inhibiting the serotonin transporter (SERT), increasing serotonin levels in the synaptic cleft and enhancing serotonergic neurotransmission. This mechanism was intended to alleviate symptoms of major depressive disorder and other mood disorders. Although Zimelidine was one of the first SSRIs introduced for clinical use, it was later withdrawn due to its association with Guillain-Barré syndrome. Despite its withdrawal, Zimelidine dihydrochloride remains valuable in neuropharmacological research, particularly for studying serotonin regulation and the development of safer antidepressants.
