In the E. coli 70S ribosome during the initiation state, protein S19 is modeled to contact the 23S rRNA of the 50S subunit, forming part of bridge B1a. This bridge is disrupted in models with bound EF-G, and its 23S rRNA contact site alternates between S13 and S19 depending on the ribosomal state. High-resolution ribosome structures reveal dynamic interactions in bridge B1b involving L5, S13, and S19, while bridge B1a is unresolved in crystallized ribosomes due to 23S rRNA disorder.
S19 forms a complex with S13, which binds tightly to 16S rRNA. It also interacts with the A-site tRNA, playing a critical role in ribosomal dynamics and tRNA positioning during translation. These interactions highlight its importance in ribosome structure and function.
