This protein suppresses apoptosis across various cell types, including factor-dependent lymphohematopoietic and neural cells, by regulating mitochondrial membrane permeability. It functions in a feedback loop with caspases, inhibiting their activity by preventing cytochrome c release from mitochondria and/or binding to the apoptosis-activating factor APAF-1.
Additionally, it inhibits autophagy under non-starvation conditions by interacting with BECN1 and AMBRA1, thereby suppressing their autophagy-related functions. This dual role highlights its importance in maintaining cellular homeostasis by modulating both apoptosis and autophagy.
The protein may also reduce inflammation by impairing NLRP1-inflammasome activation, which subsequently inhibits CASP1 activation and IL1B release. Its multifaceted regulatory functions underscore its critical role in cell survival, immune response, and inflammatory control.
