Factor B, a component of the alternate pathway of the complement system, is cleaved by factor D into two fragments: Ba and Bb. Bb, a serine protease, combines with complement factor 3b to form the C3 or C5 convertase, which plays a crucial role in amplifying the complement cascade. Beyond its role in the complement system, Bb has been implicated in various immune functions, including promoting the proliferation and differentiation of preactivated B-lymphocytes, enhancing the rapid spreading of peripheral blood monocytes, stimulating lymphocyte blastogenesis, and contributing to erythrocyte lysis. In contrast, the Ba fragment inhibits the proliferation of preactivated B-lymphocytes, highlighting a regulatory balance within the immune response. Together, these fragments underscore Factor B’s critical roles in both complement activation and broader immune regulation.
