This cytokine plays a crucial role in allergic inflammation and immune responses to parasite infections. It stimulates B-cell proliferation and activates eosinophils, basophils, and mast cells. It also regulates IL-33 activity by modulating the production of transmembrane and soluble forms of interleukin-1 receptor-like 1 (IL1RL1). Additionally, it antagonizes Th1-driven proinflammatory responses and downregulates the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines like IL-1, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, and TNF-alpha, partially through suppression of NF-kappa-B. It also affects non-hematopoietic cells, including endothelial cells, by inducing VCAM1, aiding eosinophil recruitment.
